How to Start an Easy Vegetable Garden

Practical advice to make gardening accessible and achievable for everyone.

Spring is well and truly here and summer is just around the corner so now is the perfect time to get out those gardening gloves and get your vegetable garden ready!

Gardening has become a hobby of Margo and mine that offers us not only the pleasure and satisfaction of growing, tending to and eating our fresh produce but also multiple therapeutic benefits.

We are by all means NOT expert / trained gardeners ourselves, we just love encouraging people to give it a go and get something in the ground. Giving practical advice to make gardening accessible and achievable for everyone.

Want to grow your own veggies but don’t know where to start?

Listen to this episode on the Two Raw Sisters Podcast: ‘How to Grow an Easy Veggie Garden’

We delve into the art of transforming any space—be it a small urban garden like Margo’s, or a large rural backyard like mine—into a productive vegetable garden you can reap the many benefits from.

4 Tips for Starting a Vegetable Garden

With a little planning and these handy tips, you can enjoy a bountiful harvest this autumn and well into winter. Head to the Two Raw Sisters App for recipe inspiration to create delicious and nutritious meals using the seasonal produce you grow, making you feel great all year around. So get out there, dig in the dirt, and plant yourself a delicious autumn vegetable patch.

1. Have your garden close to home

We recommend having your garden close to your home, preferably near the kitchen, to maximise its use and ensure easy access to fresh ingredients. We have found that this strategic placement encourages regular engagement with your garden, making it part of daily life rather than being seen as ‘another thing to do’.

2. Use mushroom compost

We love and use mushroom compost to help maintain healthy soil and to help our produce  thrive. This is something we top up our gardens with between each season.

3. Get yourself a hoe

One of our favourite pieces of gardening equipment to keep on top of the weeds and maintenance is a garden hoe. It not only helps in keeping the garden tidy but also provides a therapeutic routine for ourselves. Something we aim to do a couple of times per week.

4. Focus on fast-growing, high-yield vegetables

Ensure you select the right plants for your space. If you are a bit impatient like us or are introducing yourself to gardening we recommend focusing on vegetables that are fast-growing and high-yield.

  • Tomatoes

  • Zucchinis

  • Rocket

    Various greens such as:

  • Kale

  • Spinach

  • Cos lettuce,

  • Pak choi

  • Watercress

  • Silverbeet
